LVMH Metiers d'Art is delighted to present "Ambient Weaving II," an exhibition at 'La Main', which brings into focusthe convergence of heritage and progress through the textiles of HOSOO Co., Ltd. This showcase stands as a testament to LVMH Metiers d'Art's commitment to fostering innovation within traditional craftsmanship. The initiative, born from a partnership between HOSOO- the Kyoto based master of silk since 12 generations and partner of LVMH Metiers d'Art since 2023-, the University of Tokyo's Yasuaki Kakehi Lab, and ZOZO NEXT, Inc., has been instrumental in developing textiles that encapsulate functionality and beauty. The ongoing collaboration since 2020 heralds a new vision for textiles-one that resonates with the environmental nuances of color and light-first introduced in the 2021 exhibition "Ambient Weaving." As we enter an age wheretechnology redefines our interaction with the environment, this collaboration explores how these advancements can transform our cultural and natural landscapes. The resulting textiles are not mere fabrics but are mediums that challenge and redefine the concept of space and nature. Building on their inaugural research outcomes, HOSOO's continued efforts have yielded even moresophisticated Nishijin-ori weaves. These innovative materials are interwoven with cutting-edge elements that react to environmental shifts, embodying over 4 centuries of weaving tradition while embracing modernity. "Ambient Weaving II" is complemented by "Ori-An," a contemporary tearoom exclusively on display at La Main's3rd floor from October 8th to 11th, which has been created using shoji-like gauze made from washi paper threadsin traditional Nishijin 'sha' weaving techniques. This serene space harks back to tea rooms' origins as social hubs and recontextualizes them within today's architectural vernacular.
In conjunction with these groundbreaking prototypes, LVMH Metiers d'Art hosts a display of HOSOO's exquisite textile collection on the lower ground floor. Each piece represents a confluence of Kyoto artisanal skills with sumptuous materials like silk thread and silver-a fusion celebrated across global creative industries. By inviting visitors to experience this immersive event at La Main from September 30th to October 11th, LVMH Metiers d'Art demonstrates its commitment to promoting a dialogue between age-old traditions and cutting-edge technologies. "Ambient Weaving II" transforms textiles into interactive art where fabric and environment intersect.
